India and the Far East dominates much of Colman’s work and she quickly gained an enthusiastic following both in Asia and at home.
At The Mall Galleries, London, a sell-out exhibition of her first India paintings, "Images of India: people and Palaces", resulted in a huge commission to return and paint there and in the subsequent publishing of her much-admired book “India Colours of a Continent” (The Zaiwalla Collection).

Mark Tully, former BBC India correspondent and writer says of Colman’s portrayal of India:
“Her paintings are … not the view of some stranger. She sees the light in all its varieties. She moves round the land as Indians do............She has discovered its delicate details and the complicated patterns they form. Here are the people of India, here is the wildlife, here is the past... here is the present. Here is India.”
A retrospective exhibition of Colman’s ‘Zaiwalla' paintings was held in the Nehru Centre London.
In the Palace at Udaipur, there is a room devoted to Colman’s India prints.
